Industry News - Florists in the news
Everybody raise your hand if you want a famous customer!

How about if that customer is Ruth Madoff, famous for being the wife of Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff?

According to The New York Times, Beth Eckhardt, who runs Amagansett Flowers by Beth on Long Island, dropped Madoff as a customer when her husband’s $65-billion fraud was revealed.

The Times' June 14 profile, “The Loneliest Woman in New York,” about what life is like now for “the most vilified spouse of a financial rogue in history,” opened with this paragraph:

The Amagansett florist who decorated her husband’s annual corporate party in Montauk with lismachia, Queen Anne’s lace and thistles has banned her as a client, saying she will not associate with the wife of one of history’s most notorious financial scoundrels.

Which brings to mind one important question: What is lismachia? No, seriously, the important question is: When, if ever, should a florist ban a client?

In the story, a reporter asked Eckhardt if she would accept Ruth Madoff again as a client. “Are you kidding? No way! No way! No way! I mean, really,” she is quoted saying.

In Eckhardt’s case, the ban could be seen as a show of support for all of her customers who lost wealth as a result of Bernie Madoff’s fraud — and could help build business in the long run. But in other situations, turning down business could hurt the bottom line.

Have you ever banned a client? Can you think of a situation in which you might refuse someone’s business, or is it something you would never do?  Why?

I had a customer in the store once (had seen him a time or two as walk in - did not know him by name but face - that I asked to leave and consider taking his business elsewhere in the future. In general he was always very abrasive and confrontational (demanding discount bc he was sure the product was more than a day old and he KNOWS I need to move it). But I always just ignored his persona until the afternoon he came in and dealt with a high school pt employee.

She took his order for delivery and he went to fill out a card and wanted a blank one...not just without a greeting (Get Well etc) but no color no graphic - BLANK. And when she told him we did not have that (they blank ones still had some graphic color striping) he proceeded to Cuss her out...a 16 year old over a blank card.

I came up from back when I heard it (shocked at what I was hearing - he was down right crude) and stepped in. Asked what I could do he cussed me out saying he just wanted (insert really bad words here) blank card.
I went to the computer and zero'd out his order - told him we would not be filling it and to leave bc no one deserves that treatment and I refused to have this student learning about business in my store believe that it is acceptable as long as you are "getting paid" to be treated like that.

No dollars were worth her learning that this is how professional adults behave.

Another gentleman had walked in at the tail end - long enough to know what was happening - and when this guy started fuming that I was kicking him out the other customer said "Here let me get the door for you". He has since become a regular corporate account.

Some times business is not about the bank account but about the life lessons.

I had a customer for a short time that was NEVER happy with what was done for her. It didn't matter if we did the arrangement, or it was a wire order. It was never good enough and she'd come back wanting a refund or discount. I finally told her I couldn't afford to have her as a customer. I found out shortly after that that she had been banned from several other florists.

I had another one that called on Valentine's Day wanting an immediate delivery. I explained, that while we'd get his order out that day, that my delivery people were out and I'd send the first person back with it. He wanted me to send one of my customer service people and I said no. He insisted I call a cab to delivery it and said he'd pay for it. then he called every 10 minutes to see when it was delivered. When I told him it had been delivered, he said he didn't want to pay for the cab fare and I should have offered to pay for it. ( I think the order was about if I remember right). He intimated that he MIGHT become a regular customer if I refunded the cab fare. I refunded his cab fare and told him we were too small of a florist to handle his demands, but thanks anyway.

It is a sad story. It seems to me a lot of rich people, especially politicians can be called scoundrels. I believe it was a huge mistake of the florist. Well, you know it is strange that the man did so. Usually people understand that when a rich person becomes poor it doesn't mean that it is forever. Soon everything wil be ok. I've read a lot of stories about famous and rich people. I find a lot of biographies at the pdf search engine http://pdf.rapid4me.com . I believe, the matter was not only in moral principles but maybe even in some personal abuse.

Sad it is but is that a rightful thing to do to begin with? I mean if the florist can get what they want in exchange for their flowers and services wouldn't that be enough already.
