Sales, Profit Builders - Customer Service

Everybody makes mistakes in business, and most savvy business owners will do whatever they can to make it better for the customer. Bill Schodowski, who heads up Delaware Valley Wholesale Florist's national sales development, did that – and then made a full confession to his entire Delaware Valley Floral Group customer base about how, as he put it, “we screwed up . . . and lived to tell about it.”

Trends and Research - Industry Statistics

“How’s it going?”

We ask this question pretty much every time we’re on the phone with an SAF member. Anecdotally, it gives us a sense of how the industry is doing.  But toward the end of last year, we wanted to get more of a “statistically accurate” sense for how our members are doing in this recession.

So we sent an “economic outlook” survey late in January to SAF members. We asked about how business was going, what the prospects were for things improving, whether you were adjusting your staff levels. The results were interesting – and you can see them in the Spring issue of SAF’s Floral Trend Tracker.

Operations - Legal Questions & Answers

When is the last time you heard the IRS want to rescind a law that generates tax revenue?  Possibly never?  But it’s true.

The Obama Administration has asked Congress to repeal a widely ignored law from 1989 that required employers and employees to pay taxes on personal use of company cell phones.

The law stated that personal use of a company cell phone should be taxed like any other fringe benefit.  But the IRS on Wednesday said the law is burdensome, poorly understood and difficult to administer.

“The passage of time, advances in technology and the nature of communication in the modern workplace have rendered this law obsolete,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman in a statement.

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), chairman of the Senate Small Business Committee, also noted that cell phones are no longer considered “executive perks or luxuries” but have become everyday necessities in the workplace.

The House passed a bill to repeal the tax last year but it stalled in the Senate.  Bills have been introduced this year in both the House and Senate.

So soon with the approval of Congress, you’ll be able to make a guilt-free personal call on a company cell phone.

The most frequent question I receive from both prospective members and current members is, "What can SAF do for me? I'm just a small florist in a really small town and there are only two of us running this store."

 The answer is a LOT!

SAF is here to help you run your business and to provide you with the tools and resources you need to keep your business going and growing. SAF's marketing materials are designed specifically with the incredibly busy shop owner in mind. We take the work out of creating your own marketing campaign by providing you with a variety of coordinated marketing materials that are easy to customize and ready to use.

saim_webUse an SAF postcard to send an offer to your customers for a free rose, a discount or just a reminder to come in. Send the coordinating statement stuffer with arrangements being delivered, offering the recipient a discount to bring in the vase from their arrangement for a new arrangement. Finally, use the coordinating poster in your shop's window. Not only will it draw attention to customers you have not acquired, but it will also serve as a reminder to your customers that have seen either your postcard or your statement stuffer to stop in.

We understand it's easy to get stuck in a rut and use the same promotion ideas over and over again. If you're ever looking for new ideas on how to use your marketing materials check out SAF's Marketing Tips and Tools.

Breaking the Credit Addiction PDF Print E-mail
Cost Cutters - Cost of Goods Sold
I’ve been hearing from retailers who are struggling with how to live with less credit.

Credit seems like such a wonderful thing at first. It's like it gives us freedom - freedom to buy something now rather than wait. However, once you've bought the item credit creates bondage. Payments have to been made until the debt is retired. Our present economy is bringing home the hard lessons of being in debt, and it's not pretty.

The major source of credit problems for most people is credit cards. The payments are set very low and the interest rates are - in my opinion - usury, i.e. immorally high.

The first rule of living within your means is to not have any credit card debt. If you are going to use credit cards, pay them off in full every month. Then you pay no interest and get the benefits that go along with the card - like airline miles.

However, if you want to live more frugally, don't use your credit cards at all. Put them away for those times when you have to use them - like buying an airline ticket. Go to a cash system where you buy everything with cash. Of course you could also negotiate with your large suppliers a small discount for using cash instead of credit cards.

When your cash is gone, you stop buying. It is true of everyone that it is easier to spend money when all you do is put down a piece of plastic rather than forking over greenbacks. I guarantee you will spend less if you put your credit cards away.
